UK Firework Laws: When Can You Set Off Fireworks?

October 23, 2026

Planning a display and wondering what time you can set off fireworks? UK firework law is simple once you know the key times and rules. Here is a plain-English guide for England and Wales (Scotland has its own, stricter rules).

What time can you set off fireworks?

You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am. There are four exceptions:

  • Bonfire Night (5 November): until midnight
  • New Year’s Eve: until 1am
  • Diwali: until 1am
  • Chinese New Year: until 1am

Councils can also set their own rules for public places, so check before using fireworks anywhere other than private land.

Who can buy fireworks?

You must be 18 or over to buy category F2 and F3 fireworks, and under-18s must not carry fireworks in a public place.

F1, F2 and F3: what the categories mean

  • F1 — very low hazard, such as sparklers and smoke grenades. Usually a 1 metre safety distance.
  • F2 — garden fireworks. Spectators must be at least 8 metres away.
  • F3 — display fireworks for large open areas. Spectators must be at least 25 metres away.

The category and safety distance are printed on every firework. If your garden is small, choose F2 items such as fountains and wheels or garden firework cakes.

Where can you set off fireworks?

Only on your own land or with the landowner’s permission. It is against the law to set off fireworks in the street or other public places.

Be a good neighbour

  • Tell neighbours when you plan to have a display, especially if they have pets.
  • Choose low-noise fireworks where you can.
  • Keep to the legal times and clear up afterwards.
